This qualification aims to provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to maintain and operate marine engines, machinery and systems at middle management levels. It is compliant with STCW (Manila) Table A III/2 and provides the theoretical knowledge required by the AMSA for the position of Second Engineer on board vessels with a propulsion power of 3000 KW or more, operating in Australian coastal and international waters.

Admission Requirements

To gain admission to this qualification you need to meet the minimum entry requirement equivalent to Australian Year 12 with passes in English and Mathematics and:
  • Diploma of Transport and Distribution (Marine Engineering - Engineer Watchkeeper) (TDM50207) or equivalent or above, showing that you have obtained the Engineer Watchkeeper certificate Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) letter of assessment verifying you have 15 months approved sea time
  • An AMSA recognised senior first aid certificate or elementary first aid certificate before you can attend the medical first aid (MFA) course
  • If you have not completed Proficiency in Survival Craft (PSC), Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF) and MFA to Australian STCW (Manila) requirements you will be required to complete them prior to completing this qualification.

Please note that AMSA do not recognise any overseas short courses.
