Central Institute of Technology Honoured as Western Australia’s International Training Provider of the Year

neilwata1Central Institute of Technology has been officially honoured as the inaugural winner of Western Australia’s International Training Provider of the Year award. The Institute was presented with this auspicious award at a gala dinner at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre.

Training Minister, The Hon Peter Collier MLC attended the event which is hosted annually by the Department of Training and Workforce Development.

The WA Training Awards recognise and reward outstanding achievements of apprentices, trainees and vocational students, and the contribution to training made by trainers, training organisations and employers.

The International Training Provider of the Year Award won by Central recognises innovation and excellence demonstrated by registered training organisations providing training to full fee paying international students.

Spotlight on a College – Challenger Institute of Technology

challenger_logo_med Challenger Institute of Technology consists of seven campuses located along the coastline south of the Perth CBD from Fremantle to Mandurah (Peel) and inland to Murdoch. Challenger offers over 50 courses, from Certificate III to Advanced Diploma in a wide range of areas including engineering, horticulture, hospitality, business, maritime, community and health. Many of these courses include work placements to provide students with an opportunity to apply their skills in a workplace setting.

Challenger courses also provide a pathway to university. On completion of a Certificate IV graduates can use their qualification to meet university entry requirements and completion of a diploma or advanced diploma will in many cases provide entry into the second year of a university degree.

New Courses Offered in the Construction Trades

construction Trade CoursesETI is pleased to announce that a suite of new programs in the construction trades are now available for enrolment in 2011.

Economists are predicting that Western Australia will be entering a resources boom within the next year resulting in a significant shortage of skilled labour. The Commonwealth Government published a skilled occupation list which identifies areas of future employment need. Many of these are in the construction trades and Polytechnic West in Perth is now offering courses in four of these skilled shortage areas.  They include: Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying, Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling, Certificate III in Solid Plastering, Certificate III in Carpentry.

These courses are taught through practical training in the college’s workshops as well as through work experience and industrial placement with Perth construction companies.  The courses are 80% practical and run for 20 hours per week across three days. The classes are designed to reflect the construction industry working hours and start at 7.30am through to 3.00pm.

Spotlight on a School - Como Secondary College

Como Secondary College is located within the community of South Perth, just 6 kms from the Perth CBD. Como  Secondary College is a school of the Department of Education and as such enjoys the support and quality assurance of a government school.

Como has an enrolment of over 800 students studying across years 8 through 12. Besides the usual academic courses Como runs specialist programs in science and technology, music, hockey and golf.

Como is a very popular school for international students because of its strong reputation, central location and close relationship with Curtin University which is located nearby.

Graduate Profile - Music Business Graduate Scores Dream Job

Bex2Former Central Institute of Technology music business graduate, Rebecca (Bex) Chilcott has scored her dream job where she can combine her passion for music and events.

Bex completed a Certificate IV and Diploma of Music Business last year, and now six months later (June 2010), has a full resume with a substantial work history including events coordinator and liaison positions with various Western Australia music festivals, and now her current role is as booking agent at a popular local music venue.

With certificate through to diploma training across performance, technical production and business, Central's reputation for producing quality music industry graduates has grown over the last 15 years. This growth continues in July when Central introduces their inaugural Advanced Diploma in Music Business commercial course.

In this course students will develop and manage projects such as CD releases, event promotions, artist management and music publishing. Running over 40 weeks, the course will be a work-based practical opportunity for participants to develop business plans and manage music projects with specialised support from experienced industry, business and academic mentors.

Hours are flexible to meet the needs of students, and graduates of the course will be able to pathway into a Bachelor degree.

Associate Degree in Aviation – Maintenance Engineering

Due to popular demand Polytechnic West has increased its quota for international students wishing to study this course in semester one 2011. This fantastic program is taught at Perth’s Jandakot Airport where Polytechnic West has established its Aerospace Training Centre. The 2.5 year program includes academic and practical study to ensure the student gains the skills needed to become an aircraft maintenance engineer while at the same time providing them with the academic knowledge to gain entry directly into the third year of a university bachelor degree. 2011 TAFE Course Guide

2011 Online Course Guide

The TAFE 2011 Online Course Guide is now available. A pdf version is also available for downloading. The 2011 Primary School Brochure is also now available on our website. The 2011 Secondary School and the 2011 ELICOS brochures are currently being updated and will be out shortly. In the mean time please refer to the 2010 version.

2011 Course Fees

Primary, Secondary and ELICOS course fees will remain unchanged in 2011. The course fees for some TAFE programs will however increase by 5-10%. To minimise the impact on students these fees will only come into effect from semester two, 2011. Current students can avoid the fee increase by paying the balance of their course fees well in advance.

2011 Semester One TAFE Application Deadlines

Education and Training International has put application deadlines in place to ensure enough time is allowed for student applications to be processed and student visas to be granted.

For new students applying from overseas from Immigration Dept assessment level 3 and 4 countries the application closing date is 10 December 2010. For students who have already received a letter of offer from ETI the last date to accept the offer and receive your Confirmation of Enrolment is 4 January 2011.

For new students applying from overseas from Immigration Dept assessment level 1 and 2 countries the application closing date is 7 January 2011. For students who have already received a letter of offer from ETI the last date to accept the offer and receive your Confirmation of Enrolment is 21 January 2011.

These deadlines only apply to students who are applying from overseas. Students already living in Australia are able to apply right up to the start of classes. Please note however that some courses and campuses are very popular and fill up weeks or even months in advance. Students are always encouraged to apply early so they are more likely to be successful in gaining a place in their desired course and campus.
