Fitness (Certificate III to Certificate IV)

These Fitness courses provide the student with the skills and knowledge to plan and conduct a fitness program and a group exercise class. The students learn about the role of fitness instructors, how to analyse risk, respond to emergency situations and maintain equipment. This is the national qualification required by students who wish to be employed as personal trainers.

Study Location(s) Available: In Perth - Northbridge, Fremantle, Joondalup and Thornlie offer both courses
College(s): Central, Challenger, West Coast, Swan
Approximate Tuition Costs: A$5,000 per semester
Commencement/Intake Availability: Feb & July for Northbridge. Fremantle, Joondalup, Bunbury & Albany have a Feb intake only.
Special Requirements: A current Senior First Aid Certificate is required before undertaking supervised work placement. Students can complete a senior first aid course on campus. Due to the vigorous physical activities required for this course, a medical clearance is also required.

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

All students enter at Certificate III level. Entry into the Certificate III requires the equivalent of Australian Year 11 with passes in English.

For Yr 10-11 and Yr 12 academic equivalence, please refer to the Entry Requirements Summary (PDF) for your relevant country. This also details the normal English proficiency standard needed.


Special Requirements

What You'll Learn in Each Course

The Certificate III provides students with the practical skills and knowledge to plan and conduct a fitness program and a group exercise class. Students will learn about the role of fitness instructors, exercise science and gain an overview of work in the industry. Students learn skills in effective communication, administration and organisation. Students also learn how to analyse risk, respond to emergency situation and maintain equipment.

The Certificate IV provides a wide range of practical skills and knowledge to plan and conduct fitness programs over a range of contexts including: one on one, unpredictable environments, and providing exercise for low risk clients with common medical conditions. As part of this qualification students will investigate pathways to work with allied health professionals, undertake basic postural appraisals, utilise a broad range of fitness equipment and analyse client behaviours and strategies to increase exercise adherence.


Work Experience, Activities & Events

These courses may include a supervised work placement.


Career Outcomes

Depending on the stage of completion, graduates can gain employment in the Fitness industry or as a registered fitness trainer - e.g. a Personal Trainer for older adults, children and adolescents or Aqua Trainer.

Successful completion of this course may allow students to continue further studies at university in related subjects. Please contact your specific university of interest for more details on entry.
