Photography (Certificate IV to Advanced Diploma)

Provides students with the skills and knowledge to compose, take, develop and enhance photo images. Students learn about the production of photographic and digital images, camera techniques, lighting, studio and location work. As part of the qualification students will undertake a supervised work placement where they can apply the skills and knowledge learnt.

Special Entry Requirements: Entry into this program requires submission of a Folio. The Certificate III in Design Fundamentals is a foundation course for those without Yr 12 equivalence or a Folio.

Other Info: Students need to have a suitable camera - the minimum being a 35mm S.L.R. camera that must have manual exposure and manual focus ability, along with a 50mm lens. A quality tripod and light meter are also required.

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

Entry into the Certificate IV - Advanced Diploma requires the equivalent of Australian Year 12 with passes in English or completion of the Certificate III in Design Fundamentals.

For Yr 10-11 and Yr 12 academic equivalence, please refer to the Entry Requirements Summary (PDF) for your relevant country. This also details the normal English proficiency standard needed.


Special Entry Requirements

Entry into the Cert IV - Advanced Diploma requires submission of a folio. Please see the Folio Requirements (PDF) for more details. Note: Courses requiring folios for entry need to be applied for at least several weeks earlier than normal.


What You'll Learn in Each Course

The Certificate IV provides students with the practical skills and knowledge to compose, take, develop and enhance photo-images using various techniques. Students will learn about the production of photographic and digital images, camera techniques, lighting, studio and location work, along with skills in computer image management, effective communication, photographic mathematics and business skills.

The Diploma further develops the practical skills and knowledge in composing, taking and developing photographs using various techniques. Students learn skills in business, publishing systems and markets, digital imaging and photographic illustration. They will be able to choose to develop skills in industrial and scientific photography, fine art photography, design or photojournalism.

The Advanced Diploma further develops the practical skills and knowledge in composing, taking and developing photographs using various techniques. Students learn skills in business, research, illustration, exhibition photography, close up and contemporary studio photography.


Work Experience, Activities & Events

As part of the Advanced Diploma, students will undertake a supervised work placement where they can apply the skills and knowledge learnt.


Career Outcomes

Depending on the stage of completion, graduates can gain employment as a photographer's assistant, freelance or professional photographer, processing laboratory technician and wholesale/retail equipment supplier.


Further Study & University Options

Studies at TAFE WA can be continued through to the Advanced Diploma level (see the Study Pathway diagram above). Successful completion of the Advanced Diploma will allow guaranteed entry to the Bachelor of Arts (Design Photography) at Curtin University in W.A. Students will receive around 300 credits at Curtin (equivalent to around 12 months of the Bachelor degree).


Other Study Costs (paid to College upon start):

There are material fees for each course of about A$2,500 per year. Students also need to have a suitable camera - the minimum being a 35mm S.L.R. camera that must have manual exposure and manual focus ability, along with a 50mm lens. A quality tripod and light meter are also required. Lecturers can advise on feature and equipment requirements.
