Aquaculture - Seafood Industry (Cert III & Diploma)

Aquaculture involves the farming of freshwater and marine fish, crustaceans, molluscs, algae and aquatic plants and organisms. Currently over 25% of the world's fishing harvest is from aquaculture farms and this is increasing rapidly. The industry is diverse and training provides skills in hatchery and on-growing operations as well as marketing and support services.

Approximate Tuition Costs: A$10,000 per year
Commencement/Intake Availability: February only
Other Study Costs (paid to College): A diving fee of around A$350 applies and a diving medical exam costs around A$80. A radio licence is also required which costs about A$50. Fees may also apply for any short courses undertaken.

In the first year of this course, students will undertake one term (about 10 weeks) of work experience.

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

Entry to the Certificate III requires the equivalent of Australian Year 10 with passes in English.

For Yr 10-11 and Yr 12 academic equivalence, please refer to the Entry Requirements Summary (PDF) for your relevant country. This also details the normal English proficiency standard needed.


What You'll Learn in Each Course

The Certificate III prepares students to work in industries like freshwater farms, marine farms, and the aquarium industry. The Diploma is designed to develop business skills required by potential operators in the Aquaculture industry.


Work Experience, Activities & Events

In the first year of this course, students will undertake one term (approximately 10 weeks) of work experience. A marine fish hatchery is now in operation at the Maritime Training Centre and students will have the opportunity to work in this facility as part of the work experience requirements.


About the Maritime Training Centre

The Maritime Training Centre is situated in the heart of Western Australia’s major port of Fremantle and is equipped with the latest facilities including ship & training simulators, an aquaculture hatchery and a fleet of six vessels including the 18-metre training vessel “Maritime Image”. The Centre’s proximity to the waterfront, shipbuilding and repair facilities, cargo operations and Western Australian shipping companies has contributed to its reputation as one of the most innovative and industry-relevant maritime training facilities in Australia.


Career Outcomes

Depending on the stage of completion, graduates can find employment as Acquaculture Farm Assistants or Technicians, Hobby Aquarium Shop Assistants, Seafood Processors and Small Business Operators.


Further Study & University Options

Graduates of the Diploma may be able to enrol in a related Bachelor degree in universities such as Murdoch. Please contact your university of interest for details.
