Community Welfare Work (Diploma)

There is currently a shortage of welfare workers in Perth. This two year course provides the students with the skills and knowledge to manage the service delivery of community organisations. Students learn skills in consultation, community program development, group work, advocacy, case management, policy and research. As part of the qualification students undertake a supervised work placement.

Study Location(s) Available: In Perth - Mt Lawley, Joondalup, Fremantle, Thornlie and Midland. In Regional W.A. - Albany & Geraldton
College(s): Central, Swan, Challenger, West Coast, Great Southern, Central West
Approximate Tuition Costs: A$10,000 per year
Commencement/Intake Availability: Feb and July (except Albany and Geraldton which has a Feb intake only)
Special Requirements: A current Senior First Aid Certificate is required before undertaking supervised work placement. Students can complete a senior first aid course on campus. A Federal Police Clearance is required prior to work placement and employment in most community services agencies.*

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

To enter this Diploma students must complete any Certificate IV in a community services area (except Childrens Services)


Special Requirements

> A current Senior First Aid Certificate is required before undertaking supervised work placement. Students can complete a senior first aid course on campus - which must be finished in the first 6 weeks.

> A Federal Police Clearance is required prior to work placement and employment in most community services agencies.

What You'll Learn in this Course

This qualification provides students with the practical skills and knowledge to manage the service delivery of community service organisations. Students learn skills in consultation, community program development, group work, advocacy, case management, policy, and research. They also learn skills in the management of finances, work safety, and the work environment. They undertake projects that involve working as part of a team and with the community.


Work Experience, Activities & Events

As part of this course students will undertake a supervised work placement where they are able to apply the skills and knowledge learnt as well as gain valuable industry experience and contacts.


Career Outcomes

Graduates of this course can gain employment as a social worker, case worker/coordinator or welfare worker.


Further Study & University Options

Successful completion of this course will allow students to continue further studies at university in related subjects such as a Bachelor of Social Work.  Often with credit. Please contact your specific university of interest for more details on entry.
