There is currently a shortage of child care workers and coordinators in Perth. This course provides students with the skills and knowledge to provide care for the social, emotional, physical and educational needs of infants and young children (aged 0-12). As part of the qualification students undertake a supervised work placement.

Duration (depends on entry & exit point): 1 to 2 years of full-time study
Study Location(s) Available: In Perth - Mt Lawley, Thornlie, Joondalup, Rockingham and Midland offer both courses. In Regional W.A. - Albany offers the Diploma only
College(s): Central, Swan, Challenger, West Coast, Great Southern
Approximate Tuition Costs: A$10,000 per year
Commencement/Intake Availability: Feb and July (except Joondalup, Rockingham & Albany which have Feb intakes only)
Special Requirements: A current Senior First Aid Certificate is required before undertaking supervised work placement. Students can complete a senior first aid course on campus. Students are also required to have a medical clearance, tuberculosis clearance, a Federal Police Clearance and a “Work with Children Card” from the Department of Community Development (DCD).*
Other Study Costs (paid to College): The First Aid certificate costs around A$100
Other Info: > The Cert III at Joondalup, Rockingham & Albany is 12 months.

Program Components & Pathway

This program can include multiple courses and different entry and exit points providing students the flexibility to begin at the most suitable stage and continue studying till they reach their desired outcome. Please see the study pathway diagram below.

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

All students enter at Certificate III level. Entry into the Certificate III requires the equivalent of Australian Year 11 with passes in English.

For Yr 10-11 and Yr 12 academic equivalence, please refer to the Entry Requirements Summary (PDF) for your relevant country. This also details the normal English proficiency standard needed.


Special Requirements

> A current Senior First Aid Certificate is required before undertaking supervised work placement. Students can complete a senior first aid course on campus - which must be finished in the first 6 weeks.

> Students are also required to have a medical clearance, tuberculosis clearance, a Federal Police Clearance and a “Work with Children Card” from the Department of Community Development (DCD).

What You'll Learn in this Course

Students will also learn skills in planning care routines, delivering and evaluating activities, and fostering all aspects of a child’s development. Students will learn about working with families, observing and recording children’s behaviour, working with culturally diverse clients, and managing safety in the workplace.


Work Experience, Activities & Events

As part of this course students will undertake a supervised work placement in a child care centre where they are able to apply the skills and knowledge learnt.


Career Outcomes

Depending on the stage of completion, graduates can gain employment as a childcare worker, group leader and, with suitable experience a coordinator of childcare services. Graduates can work in settings such as Long Day Child Care Centres, Occasional Child Care Centres, Outside School Care, Vacation Care Programs and Home Based Child Care.
