Mechanical Engineering (Diploma & Advanced Diploma)

Provides students with the technical skills and knowledge to carry out mechanical engineering detail drafting and design and oversee the installation and maintenance of machinery. Students learn a range of computer drafting skills as well as skills to prepare drawings and operate and maintain mechanical equipment. Students learn project management, occupational health and safety, quality control, team building, engineering computing and design graphics. Students will apply their skills by undertaking an engineering project. As graduates the students will be eligible for membership of the Institute of Engineers.

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

Entry into the Diploma requires the equivalent of Australian Year 12 with passes in English and Mathematics. Or students can commence with the Certificate III in Drafting before proceeding to the Diploma.

For Yr 10-11 and Yr 12 academic equivalence, please refer to the Entry Requirements Summary (PDF) for your relevant country. This also details the normal English proficiency standard needed.


What You'll Learn in Each Course

This program provides students with the practical skills and knowledge to carry out mechanical engineering detail drafting and design and oversee the installation and maintenance of machinery. As part of the Diploma, students learn a range of computer drafting skills as well as skills to prepare drawings, how to design mechanical equipment, operate and maintain mechanical systems and develop their knowledge of engineering processes and principles.

At the Advanced Diploma level students learn project management, occupational health and safety for supervisors, quality controls, team building, engineering computing and design and graphics. Students will also apply the skills learnt by undertaking an engineering project. As graduates, they will be eligible for membership to the Institute of Engineers.


Career Outcomes

Depending on the stage of completion, graduates can become a mechanical engineering associate/technician or design drafter and with suitable experience a supervisor. Graduates may seek employment as a design draftsperson in the engineering, metals, manufacturing, building or construction industries.


Further Study & University Options

Successful completion of the Advanced Diploma will allow entry to the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) at Curtin University in W.A. Graduates can receive up to 12 months of credit in this 4 year degree.
