Provides students with skills in programming and software development. The students use PC based software applications and networks. Specialist skills are developed in the course and a significant amount of work experience is arranged by the college for the student.

Study Location(s) Available: In Perth - Joondalup, Bentley & Rockingham offer all courses; Fremantle e-Tech offers the Cert III & Cert IV only; East Perth, Thornlie, Peel, Midland & Balga offer the Cert III only. In Regional W.A. - Geraldton offers the Cert III.
College(s): West Coast, Swan, Challenger, Central, Central West
Approximate Tuition Costs: A$10,000 per year
Commencement/Intake Availability: February and July (except Rockingham which has a Feb intake only for the Diploma and Peel which has a Feb intake only for the Cert III)
Guaranteed University Entry Available? Graduates of the Diploma at West Coast (Joondalup) will be able to enter a Bachelor of Computer Science or Business - Information Processing at Edith Cowan university.**
University Credit Possible?
Up to 12 months credit is available at Edith Cowan.*
Other Info: There is no direct entry to the Cert IV, the Cert III in Information Technology - Applications forms the first 6 months of the Cert IV

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites

Entry into the Certificate III requires the equivalent of Australian Year 11 with passes in English and Maths or completion of the Cert II in Information Technology.

For Yr 10-11 and Yr 12 academic equivalence, please refer to the Entry Requirements Summary (PDF) for your relevant country. This also details the normal English proficiency standard needed.


What You'll Learn in Each Course

This program has been designed to provide students with skills in programming and software development. Graduates will be able to use PC-based software applications, and networks effectively. Specialist skills will be developed at the Diploma level in software development and involves a significant amount of work experience which is arranged by the Colleges.


Additional College-Specific Information

Students enrolling at West Coast (Joondalup) will also be able to enrol in the Microsoft Certified Professional qualifications which are industry-recognised certifications designed by Microsoft to train people who wish to become network administrators, programmers and system managers. Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) certification, the premier Microsoft desktop certification, is a globally recognized standard for demonstrating desktop skills. Joondalup TAFE is a MOUS testing facility. The Certificate II and III at Joondalup cover the standard MOUS content.


Career Outcomes

Depending on the stage of completion, graduates can obtain various skilled jobs - including as programmers - in the software development industry.


Further Study & University Options

Graduates of the Diploma at West Coast TAFE (Joondalup) can enter the Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) or Bachelor of Business - Information Processing at Edith Cowan University (ECU) with credit of up to 12 months.

Graduates of other Colleges may be able to continue in further studies at university in related subjects. Please contact your specific university of interest for more details on entry.
